After graduating from the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia and playing bassoon five years in the Puerto Rico Symphony, McColl took a degree in Psychology. She was awarded Phi Beta Kappa membership and admitted to the Ph.D. program in Developmental Psychology.

She began coaching chamber music, first at the Cornish School of the Arts and then at the University of Washington Extension. During this time she returned to her first love, painting. (Her first award was from the American Veteran's Poppy Poster Contest - when she was 10 years old.) With solo shows in Edmonds, Bellevue, Seattle, and Gig Harbor, she has been in numerous juried shows with four inclusions in the Frye Art Museum's annual Puget Sound Exhibition.
